Total Disc Replacement

Total Disc Replacement (TDR) may be a solution for some people with degerative disc disease as an alternative to spinal fuduring disc replacement surgery, the surgeon removes the damaged disc and replaces it with an artificial disc. The goals of total disc replacement surgery are tosion surgery
1. Maintain segmental spinal motion
2. Relieve pain and increase activity
3. Restore disc height and proper spine curvature
4. Reduce post-operative recuperation time

Reduce risk of bone graft donor site pain and pseudarthrosis, which is improper movement of a joint after healing with this technique the Degenerative Intervertebral Disc replaced with an artificial component. The artificial disc is a sterile device made of two base plates connected with a pivot. This structure allows a wide range of movements. The total motion of the disc in extension and flexion is 30degree.

There are different sizes to ensure that the disc matches as closely as possible the patient’s natural disc. Generally the disc materials are made of metal to avoid wear to creep found with other implant materials.

This procedure is done under general anesthesia. The surgery is performed through anterior part of the neck. Surgeon will dissect the anterior part of the neck. The degenerative disc is carefully removed enabling the insertion of the new disc. After a carefully confirmation of the size and height of the degenerated disc the new artificial disc is inserted. The surgeon will then verify that the position of the new disc is correct using X-ray.
